Subject: Clarification re identity of Captain William Allen
Subject: Clarification re identity of Captain William Allen
Despite what is listed as of 7/2023 in whalinghistory.org, the William Allen who was captain of this voyage is a different Capt. William Allen from Capt. William H. Allen (1826-1907).
There is no record of the latter sailing on the Mary Frazier, and at the time of this voyage, that Captain William H. Allen was captain of a different ship, the Onward (from June 1863 through November 1866). The logbook for that journey is in the manuscripts collection at the G. W. Blunt White Library at the Mystic Seaport Museum, Log 856. Subsequent to that voyage, William H. Allen (1826-1907) returned home. He was home for several years, with his next and last voyage on the Nile (1869-1871).
This information is still being updated and sorted out in the whalinghistory.org database, but there were at least two, possibly three, William Allens who were whaling captains at that time.
